Pablo Picasso belongs to one of the most influential and dominant artists of the twentieth century. His works impress the viewer till these days making Picasso the most important person in world art history. Although he made more than 20 000 paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, and others, Picassos painting Girl before a Mirror takes significant place among the most famous ones.
Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 spending most of his adult years in France and became one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century and the creator (with Georges Braque) of Cubism. He was an expatriate painter, printmaker, stage designer, ceramicist, sculptor, and was considered as a person who was radical in his art.
Picasso was one of the most talented artists of all time and was responsible for Cubist movement in art; he changed European sculpture and painting having an impact on literature, architecture, and music. Moreover, Picassos periods of creativity are separated into many different ones, such as The Blue (1901-1906), Rose (1904-1906) Periods, African Influence (1907-1909), and Cubism .
Pablo Picasso created his painting Girl before a Mirror in March 1932 in Boisgeloup (France) during his Cubism period. This work is created using oil on canvas and its size is 162.3 x 130.2 cm. This painting is placed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Additionally, the artist was very bold with his artworks and even with backgrounds that are normally placed to be a backdrop and mainly they're to assist the main subject. The author uses it within the work to create it just as intense as the basic image focal point. In addition, Picasso belongs to the movement called Modernism that rejected existing in nineteenth-century traditions for the aspiration to stretch the boundaries.
In his painting Girl before a Mirror, Picasso shows young mistress Marie-Therese Walter who was one one of his favorite subjects in the early 1930s. She has a white-haloed profile performed in lavender pink that appears serene. However, the womans profile merges with a more grossly made, frontal view of females face a crescent similar to the moon, yet intensely yellow, like the sun, and made up with a gilding of rouge, lipstick, and green eye-shadow. Thus, this work shows people two different sides of a womans nature, such as night-self and day-self, where different parts of her character exist. Particularly, vitality, the tranquility of innocent girl combined with the sexuality of a worldly woman.
Moreover, the author would like to underline the womens traditional vanity; in particular, the young woman sees her mortality image in a mirror that reflects the female as head of death. Furthermore, the right side of the mirror shows the distorted image of youth in old age, in particular, hollow and round eyes, dark face, and the intensely feminine body becomes contorted and twisted. Thus, the young person seems older and feels more anxiety, and while she is watching herself in a mirror, she tries to unite her different selves. In addition, the diamond-patterned wallpaper recalling the Harlequin costume underlines the Picassos own identification with him. MoMA states, Here a silent witness to the girls psychic and physical transformations. Thus, the painting shows that the author deeply understands the womans soul and its different positive and negative sides forcing humans to think about their life and existence on the Earth.
Pablo Picasso began to paint Girl before a Mirror in December 1931 and finished it in three months. Its compartmentalized composition and jewel tones combined with discrete zones of shining color limited by lines forced many people to compare painting visual effect to that of cloisonn? enamel or stained glass. Nevertheless, when the viewer comes closer to the work, he/she can notice that Girl before a Mirror includes multiple complex layers, clotted passages, and it is densely opaque. Such details point to that fact that this painting was often reworked. Moreover, Girl before a Mirror has various contradictions like old age and youth, moon and sun, whore and virgin, shadow and light, archetypes from Picassos earliest years. The right side image is the girls reflection that only complicates the picture pointing to a shadowy counterpart placed into work chromatically overheated and compressed space. MoMA says, The intensely mysterious relationship between the two figures is the primary subject of the painting. Moreover, the girl before the mirror lives in radically modern conditions tinged by powerful psychic overtones and mortal relations of traditional images of vanity. The form of this painting lets the viewers think about it as a visually extravagant form of journal or diary forces people to peer into Picassos life and art, and both place and time. Picasso believed that Girl before a Mirror was one of the best his works and he put a deep sense into this painting.
I have chosen Girl before a Mirror by Pablo Picasso because it forces me to think a lot about young and old ages, about vanity and frugality, etc. The author used rather bright colors but they were different at the left and right sides. Moreover, the girl before a mirror is full of life person whose one part of face similar to yellow sun spreading health and youth. Contrarily, the mirroring of the girl at the right part of the painting shows ugly facial features, in particular, the pointed nose, empty eyes, and too much red color on her face. In addition to face changes, her stomach became saggy and oddly shaped. Besides, each color of the painting is bright and saturated making specific mysteriousness. Moreover, the spot on the Marie-Thereses forehead is the special treasury where all the inner life of the girl exists. It is possible that Marie recognizes her negative sides of the character and sees them in the mirror, but nobody should know about them. Thus, it forces me to think that everybody will age and no money will save us from death. Hence, each person has to think about his/her future from young years because age does not sorry both beauty and ugliness.
In conclusion, Pablo Picasso is one of the most famous and talented artists of the modern art. His Girl before the Mirror belongs to the best his works and it is one of the world masterpieces. It skillfully reveals all humans (womens in this case) inner negative character traits and describes Picasso not only as a great painter but as a subtle psychologist and even philosopher.
